The Deacons’ work includes addressing the mercy needs of the congregation and the community, meeting the facilities needs of the church, supporting the church’s worship activities, and helping to manage the finances of the church. There are now 5 Deacons and numerous assistant deacons supported by many in the congregation helping to do this work. You don’t need to be a Deacon to assist with the work of the Deacons.
MERCY NEEDS constitute a big part of diaconal ministry. This includes helping people with rent or mortgage payments, temporary motel stays, tuition assistance, home repairs, medical payments, food, utility bills, or transportation/air fare as well as financial counseling. The nursery and orphan care ministries of Crossroads also fall under the oversight of the diaconate. You can direct donations to the Deacons’ Fund during any Sunday offering. You may also contact any Deacon to confidentially discuss these or other needs or to volunteer to help meet needs, such as, home repairs.
FACILITIES NEEDS includes maintenance and improvement of all church property and equipment, such as, minor repairs, painting, snow removal, or mowing. Over 50 people are involved in landscaping. Major projects, like building expansion, are led by the Long Range Planning Committee with the support of the Deacons. Building use for weddings or community meetings is also managed by the Deacons.
WORSHIP SUPPORT includes ushering, parking, sanctuary and church set up, sound system, and audio recording of worship services.
MANAGING FINANCES is an important role of the Session supported by the Finance Committee and Deacons. Budgeting, tracking expenses, debt management, proper accounting and reporting, and financial support for ministries are some of the activities of this group.
